The Anatolian Shepherd is descended from ancient livestock guardian dogs that have traditionally guarded flocks of sheep from wolves and larger predators in the Anatolian region of Turkey. Dogs of this type may have existed as far back as 6000 years ago.
Anatolians typically stand 27-30 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 88-145 pounds.
According to a health survey of the breed, the median lifespan for Anatolian Shepherds is 10.75 years, which is somewhat longer than average for dogs of similar size. Leading causes of death were cancer, cardiac issues and “old age.”
Health issues common with Anatolian Shepherds include skin problems, lipomas and musculoskeletal issues. Musculoskeletal problems can include osteochondrosis desicans which may require surgery to repair. Fanciers in the breed are particularly concerned with breeding to reduce the incidence of canine hip dysplasia. Breeders are beginning to test more dogs for elbow dysplasia and thyroid problems. Entropion (an eye condition) is also seen in the breed.
