The Scottish Fold began in Scotland in 1961 with a cat named Susie who had a “fold” in her ears. The fold is the result of a genetic mutation.
There are some health problems associated with the fold in the ear. Cats also have a thickened tail which is less flexible and swollen, thickened paws. However, if a Fold is bred to a non-Fold cat, these problems can be avoided. But, the fold ears can still result in ear infections.
The Scottish Fold can be more prone to skeletal lesions. Neonatal erythrolysis is also found in the Scottish Fold. Arthritis is also more common in the Scottish Fold.
