The Japanese Bobtail is a cat breed with a naturally-occurring bobbed tail due to a genetic mutation. They are native to Japan and to southeast Asia. They have been known there for centuries. Evidence suggests that the Japanese Bobtail arrived in Japan from China at least 1000 years ago.
Japanese Bobtail breeders say that the Japanese Bobtail does not have the same health problems related to taillessness that the Manx cat and other tailless breeds have. They say that there is a different gene involved. From a genetic standpoint, this seems unlikely.
