The Exotic Shorthair is a cross between the American Shorthair and the Persian. The resulting cat looks like a shorthaired Persian, with a pushed-in face. Since the original matings other breeds have been included, such as the British Shorthair and the Burmese.

The Exotic Shorthair is prone to many health problems, primarily from its pushed in face and its Persian heritage. Asymmetrical jaw is a problem and there are sinus, breathing and tear duct problems. Nostril constriction, cherry eye, tear duct overflow, dental malocclusions, polycystic kidney disease, entropion, and seborrhea oleosa are also problems. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and polycystic kidney disease are also common health problems in Persians. Hip dysplasia and luxating patellas also occur in Persians. This is not a definitive list. Breeds which have been created by using Persians are subject to all of these problems.
