There are two types of Burmese — an American Burmese and a European Burmese.  The two cats have similar origins but diverged in their standards for the breed and in body type.

The American Burmese are prone to a condition called meningoencephalocele that produces soft head swellings and deformed heads on kittens.  There is also a problem called Flat Chest Kitten Syndrome in the Burmese.  Cherry eye affects both kinds of Burmese.  Diabetes can be a problem, as can Psychogenic Alopecia.
