The British Shorthair was developed from the British Domestic Shorthair or the Moggie — the typical British cat. The British Shorthair can weigh 12 to 18 pounds. They are considered cobby or stocky. They generally live about 15 years.
The British Shorthair is considered to be a healthy cat. They can suffer from gingivitis, but so can all cats. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can be a problem.
British Shorthair breeders are testing for hip dysplasia.
